Upper Mustang and Lo Manthang

Upper Mustang, once a restricted kingdom until 1992, is one of the most preserved regions in the world, with traditional Tibetic languages and cultures still prevalent. The area is renowned for its centuries-old caves, ancient monasteries, and unique Tibetan-style villages. Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, is an ancient walled city founded in the 15th century. It boasts royal palaces, historical monasteries like Jampa Monastery and Thubchen Gompa, and offers a deep dive into traditional Tibetan culture and history. The city also lies on an ancient trade route along the Kali Gandaki River, adding to its historical significance.

Muktinath

Muktinath Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, located in the Mustang district at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Known for its 108 water spouts dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Muktinath is a symbol of religious harmony and spiritual tranquility. Pilgrims and tourists visit to take a holy bath in the freezing water, believed to purify the soul and wash away sins. The temple also offers stunning views of the Himalayas, making it both a spiritual and scenic destination.

Jomsom and Kagbeni

Jomsom, the administrative center of the Mustang district, serves as a gateway to the Upper Mustang region. Known for its beautiful landscapes, apple orchards, and the bustling local market, Jomsom is a charming stop on the journey. Kagbeni, located nearby, is a picturesque village at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki River and Jhong River. With its ancient monasteries and traditional Tibetan houses, Kagbeni offers a glimpse into the unique culture and lifestyle of the region. Both locations are ideal for acclimatization and exploring the natural and cultural beauty of Mustang.
